Where the term comes from
"Forward-deployed engineer" is a Palantir coinage, borrowed from the military phrase for units stationed where the action is. Instead of selling software and wishing the customer luck, Palantir stationed engineers inside the customer's operation — people who learned the actual workflow, built against it, and stayed accountable for whether the thing worked. Two decades later, the model has gone mainstream: OpenAI and Anthropic deploy forward-deployed engineers to their largest customers, and Deloitte and AWS now sell forward-deployed engineering as a service line.
Why the biggest AI companies work this way
Because software fails at the last mile. The distance between a capable product and a working system is not more features — it is knowledge of how this particular organization actually operates: who touches what, where the exceptions hide, which step exists only in one employee's head. That knowledge cannot be gathered from a conference room. An embedded engineer acquires it by sitting where the work happens — and then ships code, not recommendations.
Why you were never offered one
Economics. An engineer embedded in your operation for weeks has always been an enterprise line item, so nobody built the service for a business with six employees. Small organizations got the opposite: off-the-shelf software built around someone else's workflow, and the quiet, permanent labor of bending your work to fit it.
